Egypt’s currency is the Egyptian Pound (EGP). USD and EUR are widely accepted at tourist sites. ATMs are available in all major cities. Carry small bills for tips and local vendors. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and most restaurants.
Lightweight, breathable clothing for sites and cities. Cover shoulders and knees when entering mosques, and some temples — scarves or a light layer are useful. Sunhat and sunglasses are essential. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
The Egyptian sun is intense year-round. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen daily and reapply often. Drink at least 2–3 litres of water per day when sightseeing. Bottled water is inexpensive and available everywhere. Avoid tap water.
Photography is permitted at most outdoor sites. Inside certain tombs and museums, a camera ticket is required (usually $5–15 USD). Ask your Egyptologist guide before shooting. The golden hours — sunrise and sunset — are spectacular at Giza and Luxor Temple.
No vaccinations are required for Egypt, but Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and up-to-date routine vaccines are recommended. Bring any prescription medication in original packaging with a doctor’s note. Travel insurance with medical cover is strongly advised.
Egyptians are famously warm and hospitable. A small tip (bakshish) is customary for good service — EGP 20–50 per person for guides at sites. Greet locals with “As-salamu alaykum”. Ask permission before photographing people. Bargaining is expected in souks.

Premium packages or multi-day Nile cruise packages usually add 5-star hotel stays, all meals, and optional excursions like a sunrise hot air balloon ride.
2 to 3 days is the ideal timeframe to comfortably explore Luxor without rushing. This allows you to split your time cleanly: one full day for the West Bank (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon) and one day for the East Bank (Karnak and Luxor Temples), leaving room for a Nile felucca sail or a morning balloon flight. While 1-day trips from Hurghada or Cairo are popular, they involve 5 to 10 hours of travel time.
For most travelers, booking a package or hiring a private guide/driver is highly recommended. Luxor's major attractions are split across two sides of the Nile River, and navigating local taxis can involve aggressive haggling. The best time to visit Luxor is from October to April. During these cooler winter months, daytime temperatures range from a pleasant 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), making walking through unshaded ancient stone temples comfortable. From May to September, summer temperatures regularly exceed 40°C (104°F), making midday sightseeing exhausting.
Generally, no. A standard Valley of the Kings entry ticket, included in most packages, grants you access to 3 general royal tombs. Premium or specialized tombs—such as Tutankhamun, Seti I, or Nefertari (in the Valley of the Queens)—require an additional, separate ticket. You can usually ask your tour operator to add these to your package for an extra fee, or purchase them directly at the gate.
